Football Conference Championships

Fck the holiday season…I’m excited for bowl season. But before we get there we have some conference championship games to get through, which in the past few years have actually been better than the bowl games themselves. So to get warmed up here goes a preview of how a some of the conference championship games are shaping up.

SEC: With LSU beating Alabama this weekend it means Auburn (8-0) all but has the SEC West Championship locked up…all they need is one more win, either against UGA in Auburn next week or Alabama on the road in the following week and the title is there’s. And meeting them in the SEC Championship game will wither be the winner of the Florida vs South Carolina game Saturday…both teams are tied atop the SEC East at 4-3.

Personally I’d like to see Florida make it to set up a Auburn vs Florida SEC final, especially since we now know it was Meyer who snitched on Cam to the papers about taking money. Revenge is a dish best served cold.

ACC: Even with the horrendous start to the season Virginia Tech can still make it to the ACC title game and have a shot at a BCS bowl with one more win. And while VTech is sure to come out of the Coastal Division it’s really anybodies game in the Atlantic.

FSU has dropped two straight, but is still in control of their own destiny…if they win they’re last two conference games against Clemson and Maryland the Atlantic title is there’s. Meanwhile Maryland still has a shot of winning if they beat FSU and win their season finale versus NC State, who could also make it to the ACC title game if they win out and someone beats FSU. Yeah, the ACC Atlantic is crazy!

Big 12: The Big 12 race is crazy because I have the feeling that anybody can beat anybody right now. Not in the North though, Nebraska is all but guaranteed a spot in the conference championship game. NU is currently 4-1 in the conference and would need to lose two of their remaining three games for Missouri to even have a shot…and two of their three final games against the worst teams in the conference (0-5 Colorado and 1-4 Kansas) it’s probably not going to happen.

The Big 12 South is were the real race is. Oklahoma State currently leads the pack at 4-1 and will need two more wins to clinch the title. Easier said than done when those games are at Texas, at Kansas, and home versus Oklahoma. But right behind Oklahoma State is Baylor, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M who each have two conference losses and they’re all thinking if they win out they’ve got a shot at the title. There’s so many scenarios it hurts my head to even try to go through them…but know this the season for everyone in the Big 12 South will come down to the Oklahoma State vs Oklahoma game on the 27th.
