Day 2 WCWS: Home Run Is Queen

UCLA out slugs Hawaii 5-2
You know you’re playing good when you out hit and out slug the best hitting team in the nation and that’s exactly what the Bruins did. UCLA had 10 hits by seven different players and they broke the school record for homeruns in a season (99) with three in this one, giving them a total of 100 on the year. The Bruins have gotten hot at the right team and are now only need one more win to make it to the championship series. The Rainbows will now play the winner of Washington-Arizona in an elimination game at 9:30pm ET today.

Tennessee slams Georgia 7-5
This game was dominated from start to finish by Tennessee. They scored the first seven runs of the game, thanks mainly to a grand slam by senior first baseman Erinn Webb in the third, before allowing UGA to finally get on the board in the bottom of the forth. But other than a little scare in the seventh, where UGA put up three runs, they were never in it. Georgia will now play the winner of the Florida/Missouri game at 7:30pm ET today.

And you know what…I’m starting to think we’re witnessing the next great college pitcher in Tennessee freshman Ivy Renfroe. In this one she allowed five runs on 10 hits, but got career high 10 strikeouts. So far in the tournament she’s pitched in every game and is 5-0 with a 1.21 ERA, has three complete game shutouts and 42 strikeouts in 34 innings of work, including wins at #2 Michigan and versus #3 Arizona and now #9 Georgia. Now that’s one badass stat line for a freshman that’s playing in her first College World Series.
