Changes To Conference Basketball Tourneys

SEC – It’s a well known fact that the SEC West sucks balls at basketball. Well finally is looks as though the SEC Commissioner’s are going to do something about it because there are talks going on right now to remedy the problem. One option being discussed is trashing two different divisions and just having one 12 team conference. The other, just seeding the teams 1-12 for the tournament rather than how they finish in their division.

Both options sound good, but I prefer the first one of just having one 12 team conference. It’d be much easier to follow along as a fan and the tourney would be a lot more competitive in the later rounds. Why split a conference into two if it’s weaker that way?

Big East – For some reason the coaches in the Big East seem to think that it’s disadvantage to the top four teams to have a double bye in the first two rounds, something about how it makes them lose their momentum. So now the rumor is that come next year they’ll be a new tournament format where no one gets a a first or second round bye.

Instead the tournament will return to the classic format where the #1 seed will play the #16 seed, the #2 the #15, and so on. And while I might agree on that the the byes are a disadvantage (maybe because I like sleep), I do support the new format because that means more games to watch for me.
