This should have be what they call in sports a rebuilding year for the Sun Devils. Their coach of the past 15 years, Pat Murphy, who lead them to four College World Series births and a 629-284-1 record had to suddenly resign late last year amidst allegations (that were later found to be true) that he committed numerous violations.

Without a coach the school made 5 year assistant, Tim Esmay, the interim head coach until they could find a replacement. Then to add insult to injury they lost their only All-American, pitcher Josh Spence to injury before the season eve started. With what seems like all the odds stacked against them, the Sun Devils flourishing…they are now 20-0 going into Pac10 play this weekend and ranked #2 in country.

In the face of adversity they have bound together as a team, with the lineup as a whole hitting an astounding .362. They might be playing so good the interim coach, who all the players a raving about, just might have coached himself into a head coaching job.

Virginia held on to the top spot in this week’s Rivals.com Top 25. The Cavaliers won a pair of midweek games over William & Mary and James Madison before sweeping Boston College at home. Arizona State, meanwhile, also continued its winning ways. The Sun Devils swept a pair of midweek games at Cal State Fullerton before sweeping red-hot Houston at home over the weekend. The Cavaliers and Sun Devils aren’t the only teams that earned impressive series wins.

Most of the top teams have had last week off for finals or Spring Break, but there were two noteworthy games this past weekend and they were both involving #6 Arizona State. On Saturday the Sun Devils played 7th ranked San Jose State and lost 8-7 and then on Sunday they played 2nd ranked Stanford and lost 12-6.

Starting Friday we’ll have some good games between a few teams in the top 10 so we’ll have a preview along with the latest rankings coming towards the end of the week.

Here is the newly released Baseball standings and Virginia is once again in the #1 spot. And this week they earned it with a 3 series game sweep of #3 ranked Florida State this weekend, which included one game where they rallied to score 6 runs in the 9th to win it 9-8. But they can’t rest because coming up next week a showdown with #9 Clemson.

Anytime you have UNC and UConn in the NIT a year after they both went to the Final Four, you the NIT is going to have a pretty damn good tournament. And the best part is UNC and UConn are 4 seeds. Teams that got snubbed by the selection committee, teams like Illinois, Arizona State, Virginia Tech and Mississippi State are the #1′s.

I never thought I’d see the day when Carolina and UConn were a lower seed than Wichita State in the NIT. The 2010 NIT complete bracket here.

#6 Arizona State’s Marathon Day: On Saturday the Sun Devil Water Polo team played 3 games, scored 46 goals, and beat two teams ranked in the to 20. First they disposed of #10 Northridge 10-8 in the morning, then smashed #19 Cal State East Bay 20-2 in the afternoon, before finishing things off with a 16-1 dusting of unranked Whittier in the evening.

#5 Hawaii Upsets #3 UCLA: It took 6 OT’s to do it, but the Rainbow Warriors finally got the job done thanks to a sudden death goal by Monika Eggens. But the game ball goes to her sister, Carmen Eggens who had 5 goals right before she got ejected in the 1st OT.

Isaiah Mustafa is the most famous Arizona State football player that nobody knows. He shall forever be known from now on as that Old Spice guy. But before all the fame and the 4 million views that this Old Spice commercial got on YouTube in less than 3 weeks, he was a wide receiver for the SunDevils and catching passes from none other than Jake “The Snake” Plummer. Go figure.
