Wayne Gretzky’s Son Ditches College For MLB

Looks like Nebraska’s Bubba Starling wasn’t the only recruit who ditched college and signed with an MLB team right before last nights 12am deadline for teams to sign their 2011 draft picks. Also making moves in the 23rd hour was Trevor Gretzky, the son of NHL great Wayne Gretzky, who had committed to attend San Diego State this Fall… but instead signed with the Cubs, who drafted him the the 7th round of the draft. Who needs stinking school when you’re ‘The Great Ones’ son. [via]

Bubba Starling Signs With Royals

Well as it turns out Bubba Starling isn’t crazy. The #119 overall football prospect in the class of 2011 by Rivals.com, who signed with Nebraska back in February isn’t going to be playing for the Cornhusker’s after all. Instead he’ll be taking his talents to Kansas City after signing a $7.5 million contract, just hours before the deadline, to play in the MLB for the Royals.

Sucks for Nebraska because now they’re left with just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster, Taylor Martinez and Brion Carnes… great for Starling, especially since all $7.5 million of that Royals money is guaranteed.

Nebraska’s Bubba Starling Turns Down Millions To Fo To College?

The moment of truth is upon us. At 12:00 am tonight Nebraska football recruit Bubba Starling (yeah I know, great name) must make his decision… join the Nebraska football team and become the QB in waiting or sign a $6-7 million contract with the Kansas City Royals who picked him 5th overall in this years draft. I know which one I’d choose. [via]

Nebraska Football Signee Turns Down $10 Million MLB Contract

Nebraska football signee Bubba Starling has a major dilemma. The quarterback is currently on campus with his teammates for summer workouts, but he might not be there for long because he was also drafted by the Kansas City Royals as the 5th pick in the 2011 MLB Draft and negotiating a $10 million contract with them.

The Royals have already offered him $7.5 million, but he’s holding out for $10 million… and you can bet your ass that if he gets it Lincoln fans can kiss their future starting QB’s ass goodbye. [via]

College Baseball Getting Instant Replay

College baseball is finally getting instant replay! Well it’ll only be used in the College World Series. And the only plays that’ll be reviewable by umpires are ones to help them in deciding if an apparent home run is fair or foul; whether a batted ball left the playing field for a home run or a ground-rule double; or whether there is fan interference on apparent home runs. But hey it’s a start. [via]
