Cal Baseball Is Here To Stay

I must admit I angry when Cal Berkley announced they were using the $13 million dollars fans donated to savecalbaseball.com to instead save men’s rugby, women’s lacrosse and women’s gymnastics because I felt people had been tricked into saving lame sports.

Well after two months of fundraising, Cal Baseball is officially here to stay. The school was presented with a check of $9 million by former Golden Bears pitcher Stu Gordon last week, which is enough money to keep Cal baseball going until 2021. Woo-hoo!

College Baseball Sucks Part II

College baseball hasn’t always sucked, but it does this year thanks to the NCAA and their stupid rule changes. And now it’s not just me saying…some of DI’s top coaches have finally grown some balls and spoke out against these new  ”safer” bats.

They’re supposed to make the game safer by decreasing the speed the ball comes off the ball so no one gets hit in the head with a line drive, but instead all they’ve down is take all the fun out of games. This year the average DI team is hitting 0.47 home runs a game and scoring 5.63 runs, down from 0.85 and 6.98 respectively at this point last season.

Vanderbilt Baseball’s Legendary Video

These guys on the Vanderbilt baseball team are legends. I have never witnessed a more hilarious college team made video than this one right here. It’s even funnier than the KU women’s soccer Jersey Shore spoof from last year (my previous fav).

A Perfect Game For The Nations #1 Team

Virginia’s baseball team not only have the distinction of being ranked #1 in the nation this morning, but also as having the first pitcher since 2002 to throw a perfect game.

Yesterday junior Will Roberts became just the 19th DI player to throw a perfect game and the first in UVA school history (2nd in ACC history), in a 2-0 victory over George Washington. Roberts struck out 10 and needed just 98 pitches to retire all 27 Colonial batters…he is now 5-0 on the season with an 1.13 ERA.

The Longest Game Of The Weekend

On Saturday the third longest game in college baseball history was played on between the University of San Diego and Fresno State…lasting 22 innings and 7 hours, 12 minutes. And what’s even more miraculous than the game itself was the Bulldog fans that actually sat through the whole thing (on the bright side their team win 3-2).

New Bats Ruining College Baseball

We interrupt you regularly scheduled basketball coverage to bring you some disappointing news from the world of baseball…it sucks! And it’s all because of these new bats the NCAA is making teams use this year that are supposedly supposed to make the game “safer” by decreasing the exit speed of the ball off the bat, but have instead only managed to decrease statistics in just about every hitting category.

Homers are down. Batting averages have plummeted. Teams are scoring less runs. Every game is a pitchers duel. Just take a look at these numbers from the SEC this year:

We Haven’t Forgot About College Baseball

All the winter sports, like basketball, are winding down and by the end of the end of the month 18 team national championships will have been handed out and dozens of individual championships. And while winter sports are coming to an end…spring sports like baseball, softball, women’s water polo and lacrosse are just getting warmed up.

So baseball update anyone? Below is a look at Baseball America’s current top 25 college baseball rankings, and a recap of each team’s performance so far this season.
