Bruce Pearl is done. Less than a week after the NCAA basically banned the dude from coaching college basketball until 2015, he’s hung up his coaching jacket to sell groceries. That’s right… statement released by Pearl today, he announced that he would be staying in Knoxville and joining HT Hackney as vice president of marketing. WTF!

But don’t act too surprised because this job is probably going to pay Pearl more than the $500,000 a year that he was offered to coach the Texas Legends, the Dallas Mavericks‘ D-League franchise… Forbes magazine ranks HT Hackney as the 82nd largest privately held company in the country with annual revenues of about $4 billion. Just about everyone is reporting that come tomorrow Bruce Pearl will finally be punished for lying to the NCAA investigators and committing a handful of violations… word is Pearl and all of his assistants are expected to be hit with “show cause” penalties, with Pearl receiving a three year sentence while the assistants will get one. Bruce Pearl is one step closer to becoming the head coach of the Texas Legends of the NDBL. Yesterday it was announced that the second year franchise had offered Pearl a contract valued at more than $500,000, which would make him the highest paid coach in D-League history (the average NDBL coaches’ salary is $80,000).

But even though Texas has offered Pearl a very generous offer, I doubt he’ll be taking it. After all it is the D-League and he can more than that as an ESPN College Basketball Analyst.

Talk about a major downgrade… Bruce Pearl might go from one of recognizable coaches in college basketball to an NBDL coach? As if getting fired wasn’t bad enough. Being a DLeague coach isn’t much better than coaching high school girl basketball.

It is time for Tennessee to answer for the recruiting violations that Lane Kiffin and Bruce Pearl made back in their tenure as head coach of their basketball and football programs. And yesterday the school took the first step towards atoning for their sins by putting themselves on two years probation… but I doubt that punishment will be enough for the NCAA, who will make their ruling on the school in the coming weeks.

It’s been a rough couple of days for Bruce Pearl. He loses to Michigan in the 1st round by 30 on Friday. Fans hold a rally for him on Sunday. Then Monday he posts a sad message on Facebook announcing that he’d been fire. And no one’s to blame but him.

Even while he was being investigated the NCAA he was still committing violations. First was the bump violation in September with a recruit. Then this month he committed another one by giving a player or his family extra tickets. Both small violations…nowhere nearly as bad as the ones at UConn. And while the March violation might have been the last straw it was his continued and persistent disregard for the rules that nailed his coffin shut.

UPDATE: Well that rally was a total waste of time. Just about everybody is reporting that Bruce Pearl has been fired by Tennessee.  The only thing holding up the school from announcing it is that the two parties are working on a buyout (even though the school does not owe him one because he was not under contract…what nice people the Vols are).
