Ex-UGA Football Coach Accused Of Ponzi Scheme

Now this is fcked up. Ex-Georgia football coach Jim Donnan is accused of making more than $14 million on a Ponzi Scheme while cheating other head coaches like Barry Switzer (Cowboys), Frank Beamer (VTech), Dennis Franchione (Texas Tech) and Tommy Tuberville (Texas Tech)… who invested in the company out of millions. What an a-hole. [via]

Fun Fact: The Highest Paid BBall Coach

Who is it? (pause for dramatic effect) John Calipari, who is crushing college and most pro coaches by pulling in a whopping $4 million a year…and that doesn’t even include the side deals he cuts with brands like Mustang and Makers Mark or the bonuses for winning.

Following calipari on the list is Michigan State’s Tom Izzo ($3.4 million a year), Florida’s Billy Donovan ($3.3 million) and Kansas’ Bill Self ($3 million). But don’t think all the college basketball’s coaches are balling out of control like these four….only 32 DI basketball coaches are earning more than a milli a year. via Forbes

Embarrassing Football Coach Arrest

This is super embarrassing and it involves a coach so I’ve got to make sure we say something about it. Todd Stroud, an assistant football coach at Colorado State, was arrested on campus in CSU’s McGraw Athletics Center last week for get this…writing bad checks. LOL! I hope none of the players were in there to see him get cuffed up.

Apparently Mr. Stroud here wrote a $4000+ check from one of his accounts to another and it bounced higher than rubber ball. And this wasn’t the first time either, according to police this was one of “many” checks he’s bounced recently due to insufficient funds. Sounds like someone needs to stop hitting up the local strip clubs on recruiting trips.

Grading The New Coaching Hires

Both Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com and Stewart Mandel of SI.com came out with ranking system to grade this years head football coaching hires. So what they have to say about Florida’s hiring of Will Muschamp, we’ve got both of their takes for you below.

Will Muschamp – Florida:

SI Grade – B*: Jeremy Foley wasted no time following Urban Meyer’s resignation going out and landing one of the hottest young names in the business. Muschamp fits a similar profile to former Florida defensive coordinator Bob Stoops at the time Oklahoma hired him. He knows how to recruit and motivate. *The B grade got downgraded from a B+ after Muschamp’s bizarre hiring of Charlie Weis as offensive coordinator.

Race Card: Ex-Pitt Coach Michael Haywood Shouldn’t Have Been Fired

The more I look at this case, the more and more I think that Pitt should have never fired Mike Haywood after he got arrested on a “domestic violence”. I mean mean isn’t this the land of the free where people are innocent until proven guilty? And as things stand now Haywood hasn’t been proven guilty of anything and it’s not looking like he will either.

In a surprise twist to the case last Friday: Haywood’s baby momma, Beth Marriot, told the judge (under oath mind you) that she never wanted him arrested or prosecuted…and that she wasn’t afraid of Haywood nor did he pose a danger to her.

The College Coaching Carousel Has Stopped

And then there were none. With the hiring of Bill Blankenship by Tulsa yesterday the 2010-11 College Football Coaching Carousel is officially over. In the past three months nine head coaches were fired, five resigned instead of being fired, and seven left to take another head coaching position at another school…for a total of 21 college head coaching changes. Which isn’t too bad, but still more than last year.

A complete list of all the 2010-11 college football coaching changes below.

The Coaching Carousel

Now that Jim Harbaugh is off the market it seems like all the schools still looking for a head coach are fighting over the same handful of coaches. So here is a recap of all the rumors and movement from the past few days and who is most likely to land the job.

Michigan: A Michigan private jet was spotted at the Baton Rouge airport, which means that if Michigan hasn’t already met with Les Miles they soon will. No need to worry though…QB Jordan Jefferson said Les already told him he ain’t going no where and LSU’s AD seems confident he’ll stay, so what if Michigan doesn’t get their 4th choice? (#1 Jim Harbaugh – Stanford #2 Gary Patterson – TCU #3 Pat Fitzgerald – Northwestern). Look for Michigan to offer the job to Brady Hoke of San Diego State, who will gladly accept.
