The Reason Vandy Coach Quit

When I first heard the news I thought for sure that Vandy football coach Bobby Johnson was pushed out and forced to resign. I mean nobody just up and quits without warning in the middle of summer right before the season starts. But now that Johnson has had his press conference, where he said multiple times “[He] decided to retire, not resign”, I think that’s exactly what he did…and the question that everyone is left wondering is why?

imjustsayingtho: Death Comes In 3′s

I didn’t start believing this whole death come in threes thing until Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson all kicked the bucket within two days of each other last year. Now I see death in threes everywhere and it’s starting to freak me out. The most recent death in three’s victims: Art Linkletter, Gary Coleman and Dennis Hopper.

So now my question is…since we had John Wooden a basketball legend die in June, a baseball legend in George Steinbrenner died today in July, who will be the football legend that’ll die in August? My money’s on Joe Paterno. He’s old, he’s been feeling sick the last few weeks, he’s lost weight, and he doesn’t like going to the doctor.

John Wooden June. George Steinbrener July. Joe Paterno August. imjustsayingtho.

Pete Carroll Is Starting To Feel Guilty

Up until now Pete Carroll has been unapologetic about the sanctions handed down to USC for violations that were committed while he was the coach. But now that his book tour has started he’s softening up so he can steal some headlines and et some sympathy from those out there that say he turned his back on USC and ran to Seattle.

In an interview yesterday I think we got the closest thing we’re going to get to Pete Carroll admitting he knew about the violations, when he admitted to “feeling responsible being connected with it“…with it being the violations and sanctions. Sounds an awful lot like he’s feeling guilty to me. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get more juicy Carroll quotes about the violations in the coming weeks, followed by some plug for his bookWin Forever“.

Oliver Purnell Releases Recruit From LOI

Finally the DePaul vs Walter Pitchford saga is over. After refusing to let the incoming freshman transfer, Coach Purnell has caved and will be releasing Walter from his Letter on Intent later this week. Really I don’t know why Purnell didn’t just let the kid go from the jump, it’s not like he’s a blue chip recruit or anything…he’s only a 2-star.

And even though Purnell eventually did the right thing and let Pitchford out of his commitment, he’ll still be known as an asshole to any future recruit for making it so tough. And everybody knows the only reason Purnell did it was because of all the shit the local media was giving him, not because he felt it was the right thing to do. Yeah this turned out to be a lose/lose for DePaul…lost a recruit and got a whole bunch of bad PR in the process.

Lane Kiffin Coming Back To Knoxville?!

Now I know the Tennessee vs USC football matchup idea has already been shot down by the Vols (probably because they know they’re going to suck for the next two years), but Kiffin may still be coming back to Knoxville. As you Vol fans out there should know, The Trojan and Vol basketball teams will be meeting in Knoxville this December and basketball coach Kevin O’Neill said yesterday he might bring Kiffin along.

Now of course he was joking, but could you imagine. Kiffin walking through Knoxville would be like George Bush walking through Afghanistan…the people would eat him alive. I doubt that it’ll matter whether Kiffin is there or not though, the Vol fans are still going to let the Trojans have it. That’s one game that if you’re a USC fan you’re definitely not going to want to go to, especially since USC beat the Vols 77-55 last year.

Pitino Extortion Case Back In The Mix

Damn I had totally forgotten that Pitino had banged some haggard looking MILF on the table of restaurant, got her pregnant, and then got blackmailed. Well the story is back in the news today because as it turns out that chick that tried to extort $10 million and some change from him tired to do the same kinda thing to another guy back in 2001.

Dean Smith’s Health And Memory Going Fast

We told you earlier that Penn State’s Joe Paterno might be soon be following Coach Wooden to that big coaching sideline in the sky very soon, but another coaching legend looks to be a little closer to the long stairway to heaven that him…UNC’s Dean Smith. The Fayetteville Observer is reporting that Smith is suffering from severe memory loss and that is so bad that on “some days he doesn’t recognize people he has known for years”.

At this time Smith’s family is refusing to comment…but Woody Durham, UNC’s radio host since 1971, confirmed it. Let’s all hope Smith’s life doesn’t fade as fast as his memory is.
