What’s Baylors Problem? Bears Block Texas A&M’s Move To SEC

Finally! After weeks of speculation, today the SEC unanimously decided to invite Texas A&M to join their league…but what should have been a day of celebration for both the Aggies and SEC has been ruined by the Baylor Bears, who are considering legal action against the SEC to keep A&M in the Big 12.

But why? On September 2nd the SEC received a unanimous written assurance from the Big 12 that the SEC was free to accept Texas A&M to join as a new member, but then yesterday Baylor and Baylor alone reversed their field. So why? Well that’s the question we’re here to answer.

The Latest On The Oklahoma To The Pac 12 Rumors

 

Last year the Big 12 was able to piece together their conference and stave off anilation, this year however they may not be as lucky. Just as Texas A&M was going a couple of weeks ago, Oklahoma is now talking the talk… with their president saying that he’d be deciding if the Sooners will be leaving the conference sometime this month.

And his comments come on the heels of a report from Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman, where he says his sources, he’s fully expecting OU to seek an invitation to the Pac-12 “within days, if not hours.”  Then there is Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott who told reporters before the LSU-Oregon that, “I will say schools have reached out to us. We are not doing anything proactively… schools have called us. We certainly are going to listen…”.

BYU Already In Talks With The Big 12

Well that was fast. The ink hasn’t even dried yet on the divorce papers and the Big 12 is already looking to replace Texas A&M. According to the Salt Lake Tribune, “BYU officials have had discussions with Big 12 officials within the past week regarding the school’s interest in joining the conference, and what conditions and assurances it would need to make the jump…”.

Texas A&M Sends The Big 12 Their Resignation Letter

It’s over. With one email today Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin told the Big 12 to kiss his ass… they’re leaving to join another conference on June 30, 2012. It’s about damn time (we’ve got that letter along with a statement from Big 12 commish Dan Beebe about A&M departure below that you can read).

So now what? Texas A&M must agree on the terms of the settlement. The SEC and the Big 12 will quitely hunt for additional members… and we’ll be sure to bring you all the rumors as they’re whispered. But as of now word is the Big 12 is looking hard at Notre Dame and Arkansas… while also considering BYU, SMU, Houston, Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Louisville. The SEC meanwhile will probably play with 13 next season, but expect them to stay at that number for long. In other words this story is just getting started.

The Big 12 Wants $30 Million From Texas A&M

We know Texas A&M is going to leave the Big 12 for the SEC… the only question left is how much will is cost them? Over the past few days, the Big 12 provided the Aggies with an outline of the steps they need to take in order to depart… and rumor has it, Texas A&M could announce their decision to defect before the weeks end.

So how much will it cost them… according to sources, a buyout would cost the Aggies somewhere in the vicinity of $10-$15 million, although the Big 12 will likely ask something closer to the $30 million mark from A&M. Damn that’s a lot of money!

Texas A&M Sends Divorce Letter To Big 12

If Texas A&M and the Big 12 were in marriage, today Texas A&M served the Big 12 their divorce papers. Posted on the Aggies website today was a letter telling the Big 12 of its plan to explore its conference affiliation options and that it would like to know what its next step should be if it decides to leave. Basically all us what we already knew… Texas A&M is chuck the Big 12 the deuces and waive hello to the SEC.

Expansion Rumors: SMU To The Big 12

Just when you thought the expansion rumors over for the summer… SMU comes out the blue and shake the landscape of college football yet again. Yesterday some officials from SMU sat down with the folks over at the Dallas Morning News and they made it clear that they want into the Big 12 should Texas A&M leave.

SMU athletic director Steve Orsini even went as far to say that they’ve already reached out to the Big 12 regarding possible membership.
