Lame Sports Cheat Sheet

Men’s Ice Hockey: Did you even notice that men’s hockey started? Well it did. Even though it’s a winter sport, the men’s college hockey season started almost four weeks ago…but things are just now starting to get interesting. This past weekend all three of the top ranked teams each suffered their first loss of the season. #1 Boston College lost to Notre Dame 2-1. #2 North Dakota dropped two games to Maine by the scores of 7-3 and 4-2. And #3 Michigan was upset by Nebraska-Omaha 4-2. So who is your new #1 ranked team in the nation, find out by viewing the newest top 25 rankings here.

Premier Matchups of the Weekend

Saturday – Field Hockey: #1 UNC falls to #2 Maryland 3-2
In what was a rematch of last years national championship game, which ended with UNC scoring the game winner with just 70 seconds remaining to win the game 3-2, it was Maryland who would stun UNC this time around. UNC came into the game as the only undefeated team in the nation, but were out shot 14-6 in this one by Maryland. With the win Maryland clinches the #1 seed in the ACC tournament beginning held  November 4-7.

Friday – Volleyball: #5 Cal upsets #2 Stanford 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 22-25, 16-25)
For just the second time in 71 meetings both Cal and Stanford came into the game ranked in the top five in the nation. And it was the Bears who came out on top behind a double-double from junior outside hitter Tarah Murrey who finished with 21 kills and 12 digs.

With the win Cal moves into first place in the Pac-10 with a conference record of 8-1 (18-1 overall), while Stanford drops to second in the standings(16-2, 7-2 Pac-10).

Cal Gets Cheap: About To Cut Five Sports

So long Cal men’s and women’s gymnastics. Adios Golden Bears women’s lacrosse. Arrivederci rugby. Goodbye Berkeley baseball. Wait. What? Cal’s cutting America’s favorite past time :-(. Times must really be hard. I can understand getting rid of the first four sports…gymnastics, lacrosse and rugby are lame and everybody knows it.

But a Pac-10 team in California getting rid of baseball, is like an SEC school in Florida axing football. It’s ludicrous, but happening. All sports will be cut after this school year.

The reasons for the cuts below…

Stud Muffin: Katie O’Donnell – Maryland

Today we’d like to recognize Maryland field hockey player Katie O’Donnell, who just became the ACC’s all-time leading point scorer with an assist in the Terps 3-0 win over #20 UMass on Sunday. O’Donnell, who is already the ACC’s career assist leader, now has 232 career points and leads the nation in assist per game with 1.71. Yeah, she’s a stud muffin! And did I mention the Terps are 7-0 and ranked 2nd in the nation.

Preseason Women’s Field Hockey Poll

Yesterday the STX/NFHCA Field Hockey Preseason Poll got released and as expected last years champ, the UNC Tar Heels got the number one ranking receiving 25 out of 56 first-place votes. And just like it’s other rich white sport brethern lacrosse, field hockey is dominated by East Coast schools….the ACC inparticularly, who has all six of their teams ranked in the top 10 and own the top three with UNC, Maryland, and Virginia ranked 1-2-3.

But before I get to far I know you’re wondering why I’m on here talking about field hockey of all sports. Well it’s because field hockey players are freaking hot. Just look at the Dutch Field Hockey team. Fatima Moreira. Ellen HoogKate Hollywood. Casey Eastham. The list goes on and on. So when we talk field, you’d best listen because we’re about to stop telling you how hot college field hockey girls are and start showing you.

Oklahoma Signs A 12 Year Old

When Lane Kiffin signed that 13 years old QB it made national headlines…Oklahoma signs a 12 year old, it barely makes the local news in the kids home state. Which is why we are just now brining you news of Brad Dalke, the #1 recruit in the class of 2016, who received and accepted a golf scholarship offer from OU last week. The kid hasn’t even started growing hair on his nuts and he’s already thinking about college?
