NCAA Softball Tournament Day 2 Recap: Down Goes Texas

Texas Knocked Out By East Carolina
This should to wake the other top seeds up. Texas, the Big 12 champs and #7 seed dropped, where eliminated after dropping back-to-back games in Austin yesterday.

After losing a heart breaker to BYU 9-8 early in the day Texas just couldn’t find their bats in the elimination game against ECU, only managing one hit all game. One hit on the other hand was all ECU needed, Marina Gusman-Brown launched a solo HR in the bottom of the sixth to give the Pirates the victory and set up a showdown with BYU in the final.

Teams With Reason To Worry
Texas A&M – The Aggies didn’t just lose they were owed by Louisiana Lafayette 5-0. The Aggies got 5 hits in the game, but couldn’t score. Now in the losers bracket, they’ll have to take the hard road through ULL and LSU to reach the Super Regionals.

Missouri – The Tigers won this one 3-2, but trailed 2-0 all the way up until the 6th inning. The only thing that saved their ass from the losers bracket was a walk-off double from Catherine Lee in the game’s final at bat that scored two runs and gave them the win.

Teams With the Hot Bats
Here are the teams that blew out their their opponent in the first game in 5 innings via the mercy rule: Florida State, Arizona, Cal, Oklahoma, Hawaii, and Alabama.

Where Is She Now: Arizona Softball Player Taryne Mowatt

I found myself thinking about Taryne Mowatt and wondering what happened to her. A few years ago she was the shit at Arizona winning championships, getting ESPY’s, and was probably the hottest pitcher since Jenny Finch. And since I figured there has to be 100 or so people out there that wonder this very exact same thing, this post came to be.

Then like so many of these softball chicks ever since she’s graduated, I haven’t heard jack-diddly-do-da-squat about her. So for you below is a quick update and some new pictures of her (and yes she is still as hot as she was in college).

Why Danielle Lawrie Is The Best Player In College Softball

UPDATE: All your up-to-date NCAA Softball Tournament news here

Someone should just give Danielle Lawrie the Player of the Year Award right now because she is hands down the best player in college softball. Last year she killed the competition, but this year she killed them and then sent the heads to their parents.

A season ago as the POY she led the nation in wins (42) and strikeouts (521), finishing 3rd in shutouts (21) and sixth in ERA (0.97). And his season her numbers are very similar even though she’s pitched over 100 less innings. Her ERA is 0.99 in 247.1 innings pitched and she has a record of 35-2 with 20 shutouts and 407 strikeouts. Numbers good enough to put her in the top 6 statistically in ERA, wins, shutouts, and strikeouts.

But her pitching wasn’t the story this year because we already knew she could do that, it was her batting. She got better at hitting like she was getting personal lessons from Pujols. Her batting average jumped from .268 to .322. She hit 14 HR’s (7 more than last year) and is ranked 15th in the NCAA in RBI’s per game with 55 total (25 more than last year).
