College Athletes At The Track World Championship

The big sporting event going on this weekend is the IAAF World Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Usain Bolt will be there and just about anybody and everybody important in the world of track along with him… shts like a mini Olympics. And also there will be a handful of college athletes representing our fine country against the world, so make sure you tune in.

The Championships start tomorrow and run all the way until September 4th, but the thing you’ll want to make sure you watch is the 100 meter men’s final.. which goes down on Sunday and can be watched on NBC (coverage starts at 12:30 PM ET).

Jeff Demps Will Play Football For UF

Good news for Gator fans… running back Jeff Demps, who rushed for 531 yards and 3 touchdowns in 2010, will be playing football for Florida this season. There was some uncertainty as to Demps football future because he was thought to have been considering turning in his football pads in order to concentrate on running track and making the 2012 Olympic squad.

But all the speculation has been put to rest by Demps himself who released the following statement.

Read what Demps had to say below…

RB Jeff Demps May Quit The UF Football Team

Will running back Jeff Demps be suiting up for the Florida Gator football program this fall… that is the question. Currently Demps is in Italy competing with the US National Track & Field team. And in case you didn’t know… in addition to being a football player, Demps is one of the fastest men in the world and can run a 9.96 second 100 meter dash (Usain Bolt currently holds the world record at 9.58 seconds).

So as you see, Demps has a dilema… play football this year or quit and focus on trying to qualify for the 2012 Olympics, which is a goal of his. And no offense to Gator fans, but I thinking he’ll eventually end up quitting.

NCAA Changing The Rules In Swimming And Track

We’ve got some NCAA rules changes for all you lame sports lovers out there. In swimming there is now a no-recall false start, which means unless there is a blatant false start, the event would continue and the swimmer charged with the false start would be disqualified at the end of the race.

And then the NCAA is also going to start requiring pole vaulters to wear specially-designed helmets starting next year… so nobody misses the mat on the landing and dies like that dude did last year. [via]

Jeff Demps The Fastest In The NCAA…Again

Different year same story. On Saturday both Oregon’s women’s team and Florida men’s team won their second consecutive NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship. And while a lot of stuff happened during the meet, the biggest story was Florida football player Jeff Demps winning his second 60 meter dash championship in a record 6.53 seconds.

And I’m just like…if Demps is running the 60 meter in 6.5 seconds, just how fast can he run the 40 yard dash in? Whatever it is I’m betting it’ll be faster than the 4.24 the Titans Chris Johnson ran at the combine back in ’08. And luckily for us since Demps is a senior to be we’ll get to find if he can break Johnson’s record at next years combine. But back to this years championships….we’ve got releases from both schools below.
