UT-Arlington Moving To The WAC

The demise of the Western Athletic Conference has been well documented by us… in the past 12 months the WAC has lost all their top teams: Boise State, Fresno State, Hawaii, and Nevada and added lack luster schools like Denver, Seattle (non-Football), BYU (non-football), UT San Antonio, and Texas State to stay afloat.

And now word is the WAC has extended yet another invitation to a small time Texas school… UT Arlington, who doesn’t even have a football program. If Arlington decides to accept the WAC’s invite (which they are expected to do) they’ll join with the rest of the newbies on July 1, 2012. [via]

Rumor: Utah State To The MWC

Let the death of the WAC talks begin. The WAC has already been jacked by the Mountain West for Boise State, Nevada, Fresno State and Hawaii and now they are close to opening it’s doors to another WAC member…Utah State.

Mountain West officials have been meeting in Las Vegas since yesterday about you know the regualar stuff: TV deals, scheduling, and of course conference expansion. Now the rumor last week was that the MWC was looking to add San Jose State, but the report coming out of Vegas is that officails have voted in favor of extending an invitation to Utah State…who they expect will accept. So what’s next for the WAC?

The MWC Is About To Kill The WAC

We’ve covered the death of the WAC on here many times before and each time they’ve somehow managed to stave it off. Whether it was forcing Fresno State, Hawaii and Nevada to stay until after the 2011-12 season after Boise State announced they were leaving this year or them picking up three wack teams: Denver (non-football), Texas State and UT San Antonio to fill their place…like a cockroach they have survived.

But not even the NCAA’s announcement yesterday that they’d bend the rules to allow the WAC to keep its autobids to NCAA tournaments in all sports might be able to save them now. In the winds there is whispers that the MWC, who has already jacked four teams from them, might soon be trying to poach both San Jose State and Utah State.

The WAC Once Again On It’s Deathbed

The WAC just continues to get wacker and wacker. The WAC might have been able to fend off death once when Boise State, Fresno State, and Nevada announce they were leaving for the MWC…but now what are they going to do now that Hawaii has announced that they would be defecting to the MWC as well? Hawaii leaving would mean the WAC has lost its four top schools to the MWC in the past six month, leaving them with seven shitty teams.

Even with their two latest additions from the I-AA ranks, the WAC would now still need to add one more by 2012 to even qualify to be a I-A football conference.

Hit Of The Week: Fan Edition

Here goes the college football hit of the week courtesy of a drunk ass fan who ran onto the field during the Fresno State vs. Nevada game on Saturday. Someone see if that security guard has any eligibility left because he’s a beast! via TheBigLead

The WAC Adds 3 Wack Schools

There was once a time when I thought the WAC was a goner. Boise State had announced they were leaving for the Mountain West Conference next year, then both Fresno State and Nevada announced they were jumping to the MWC too. Which left the WAC with just six schools, when NCAA rules state conferences need a minimum of eight. But the WAC fought off death like the Donner family…first getting Fresno State and Nevada to stay until after the 2011-12 school year.

And now the WAC has finally found they’re replacements: Denver, Texas-San Antonio and Texas State…who will all be joining the conference at the start of the 2012-13 school year. UTSA and Texas State would join in all sports, while Denver would only join in football (and the rumor is Montana could join as early as next week, giving the conference 9 football schools and 10 basketball). Yes, folks the WAC just got a whole lot wacker.

Fresno State + Nevada WAC Exit Delayed

The WAC has just managed to stay relevant until the 2012. The word is both Fresno State and Nevada have agreed to stay in the WAC until July 2012 before packing up and leaving for the Mountain West Conference. They had been trying to leave at the end of this school year, but the WAC promised to charge them a $5 million so they’ll be leaving a year later and only paying a $1 million exit fee.

Okay so just to get this right at the end of this school year this is what’s happening. Bosie State is leaving the WAC and joining the MWC, Utah is leaving the MWC and joining the Pac 12, and BYU is leaving the MWC, but going independent in football and playing in the WCC in all other sports. And then in 2012 Fresno State and Nevada will both leave the WAC and join the MWC. Phew! My head hurts.

What the conferences will look like in 2012 and 2013 below…
