Water Polo: UCLA Stuns The Field Wins MPSF Title

In what has to be the surprise upset of the weekend the UCLA women’s water polo team became the first 5th seed in the tournaments history to win the championship.

The Bruins started their incredible run by knocking off 4th seed Hawaii on Friday 8-6. Then did the impossible by beating the top ranked and seeded Stanford Cardinal team 7-6, who had only lost once all year on Saturday. And then came the improbable, UCLA completed the tournament sweep by beating cross town rival #2 seed USC 8-7 on Sunday to take home the schools 8th MPSF Title.

Water Polo: Stanford Bumps USC To #2

The #1 ranked USC women’s water polo team (20-2, 6-1 MPSF) was taken down in OT by the #2 Stanford Cardinals 7-6 Saturday afternoon. The victory gives Stanford (22-1, 7-0 MPSF) the MPSF regular season title and more importantly the top seed at next weekend’s MPSF Tournament, where if we’re lucky we’ll get to see a rematch of the now #1 Cardinals vs #2 Trojans for the 4th time this season.

Water Polo: It All Comes Down To This

It all comes down to this. Tomorrow the #1 seed in the MPSF women’s water polo tournament is up for graps when the #1 ranked Stanford Cardinal and the #2 ranked USC Women of Troy meet in the clash of the titans.

Both teams come in undefeated in MPSF play, Stanford at 5-0 and USC 4-0. Both teams have only one loss on the season…with USC’s coming on a February 6th 10-7 loss to Stanford and Stanford’s on a 10-6 loss to USC on February 28th. Other than a loss to each other the 2 teams have owned the competition, posting 28 victories between them.

Now they will meet for a 3rd and final time this regular season to see who will be crowned queen of the water. To see who will win the MPSF championship. To see who will have the #1 seed in the tournament. It all comes down to this.

    Water Polo Recap: 1 vs 4 – 2 vs 3 – 5 vs 6

It was a great day in the water yesterday…each of the top 6 teams in women’s water polo all facing off against each other in what was the 2nd to last game of league play.

#1 USC crushes #4 UCLA (14-5) – In a rivalry game that should have been close USC used a 9-0 run to win their 17th straight game and increase their record to 19-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in league. Leading the way to victory was seniors Kami Craig, Alexandra Kiss who each scored 3 in their last home game as a Trojan. Up next next for USC is a battle against #2 Stanford, the only team to beat them this year.

#2 Stanford beats #3 Cal at the buzzer (8-7) – In a game that was back and forth all day with 5 lead changes the Cal Bears lost to their bitter rivals as the buzzer sounded on a goal by Jessica Steffens. Heartbreaker. Now Stanford will be looking to avenge their only loss of the season, which came at the hands of USC when they meet them next Sunday.
